Description

Cape Henry Collegiate, a leading independent, coeducational day school in Virginia Beach, VA is seeking an innovative and experienced Physical Education teacher who will work mostly with Lower School, but also with Middle and Upper School students. Students are used to working in a creative and vibrant environment and are fully engaged by teachers who know their students well and plan activities accordingly. 
 
Position Duties (include, but are not limited to)

  • Promoting healthy lifestyles and teaching students the benefit of being physically active
  • Fostering an appreciation for fitness and wellness, understanding the impact these have on students’ social and emotional development
  • Assisting students with social/emotional learning support and guiding them to make good decisions with emphasis on treating all students with dignity and respect
  • Desiring to help students become well-rounded individuals who can respond positively to life’s challenges
  • Ensuring physical education classes are positive, accessible and inclusive for all students
  • Organizing instruction into whole group, small group and one-on-one instruction
  • Differentiating to meet a variety of needs and encouraging each child to reach his or her potential
  • Being technologically proficient and able to use a variety of applications and tools to enhance students’ physical education experience, engagement, and learning outcomes
  • Having an awareness of 21st Century global competencies and knowledge of how to weave those life skills through the curriculum (teamwork, collaboration, problem solving, creativity, communication and critical thinking)
  • Delivering new curriculum remotely, if necessary, through live instruction using digital platforms such as Zoom and Google Classroom  
  • Recognizing the importance of diversity and inclusion as tenets of our school mission statement and strategic plan, and desiring to be purposeful in planning curriculum which values and supports those tenets
  • Ensuring supervision and safety of children at all times of the day including arrival, recess, lunchtime, and dismissal as well as during instructional times
  • Planning and preparing materials for lessons and ensuring instructional spaces are safe, positive, attractive, and clean 
  • Maintaining professional relationships with all members of the school community
  • Having excellent written and oral communication skills

 
In addition to valuing physical fitness and health, we seek a teacher who is dependable, adaptable and flexible. He/she should be an excellent collaborator who can take initiative and generate ideas in support of curricular and pastoral areas. Coaching experience, teaching health education, bringing an innovative spirit, working enthusiastically with a team, planning creative and resourceful lessons, and contributing exciting new initiatives to the physical education department and athletics programs are all highly desirable qualities. Education and Experience 
A minimum of three years teaching experience is preferred.
BA/BS from an accredited college or university in physical education, health education, or exercise and sports science is desired, Masters Degree preferred.

Hiring Process

Cape Henry Collegiate welcomes resumes and letters of interest at all times.

For a posted opening, qualified candidates will be granted a preliminary phone or video conference interview. Finalists generally are invited for a full-day interview.

In most scenarios, teaching candidates will be matched with a host teacher, who will provide helpful guidance before and during the visit. Candidates are interviewed by teachers, administrators, and in some instances students. Each teaching candidate delivers a sample lesson and has the opportunity to observe a class.
